Some people think their musical taste is superior to others because they like bands and artists before everyone else and before they become popular (and then when said artists become popular said person either stops liking said artist or can’t stop talking about how said person liked said artist before everyone else knew about said artist). I, however, think my musical taste is superior to others because it’s diverse.
On my iPod (er… iPhone) you’ll find country from Carrie Underwood, Garth Brooks, Keith Urban to Little Big Town and The Dixie Chicks. You’ll find electronic and dance music from DJ’s like Kaskade, Armand van Helden, Daft Punk, Girl Talk and Louis La Roche, and from groups and duos like Freemasons, La Roux, Hot Chip, Miike Snow, Cut Copy, Chromeo and Discovery. You’ll find plenty of embarrassing stuff like Celine Dion, Jessica Simpson, the Weather Girls, Rod Stewart and Salt-N-Pepa. Of course I’ve got classics covered from Michael Jackson, The Beatles, U2, Jefferson Airplane, R.E.M., Tears for Fears and Stevie Wonder. Of course mainstream gotta-have’s like Dave Matthews Bands, The Killers, Kayne West, John Mayer and Kelly Clarkson, and then maybe a handful of never-heard-of’s… Anna Vissi, Apache Beat, Le Loup, Party Ben, Takka Takka and Glasser.
Really my library probably isn’t even that diverse if you think about it. I have a little bit of classical and a little bit of international stuff (in other languages), but I’m sure there are folks out there that could claim much more diverse (where don’t I play? folk, bluegrass, gospel, jazz, to name a few). I guess my point is more that music is completely personal. People that act like music snobs (like wine snobs) drive me nuts.
